Most house fires occur at night while we sleep and have no sense of smell, so it's simply not worth the risk of ignoring fire safety. A working smoke alarm increases your chance of surviving a house fire by 60%.

Multi-sensor alarm

Combined photoelectric sensor with heat or Carbon Monoxide sensors covers all fire types. Typically faster reacting.

Photoelectric smoke alarm

Best for detecting slow, smouldering fires as would typically occur in a modern-day home. Is less susceptible to false/nuisance alarms.

Heat alarm

Detects heat only. Popular in roof cavities and laundries/kitchens.

Carbon monoxide alarm

For early detection of the chemical signature of combustion (carbon monoxide).

Ionisation smoke alarm

Best for fast flaming fires and fires that produce minimal smoke.

Mains or battery powered?

Mains powered smoke alarms must be permanently connected (hard-wired) to the mains power supply and require a licensed electrician to install them. All mains powered smoke alarms have a battery back-up in the event of a power outage, which can either be a 9-volt alkaline battery or a rechargeable non-removable lithium battery.
Battery powered smoke alarms may be installed where mains power is not connected to the dwelling or where there is no hidden space in an existing dwelling in which to run the necessary wiring for hard-wired smoke alarms, for example where there is a concrete ceiling.

All smoke alarms have a maximum service life of ten years and need to be replaced.
