Your family and loved ones are your most valuable possessions. Having a home escape plan in conjunction with a working smoke alarm, greatly increase your chances of getting out safely - because every second counts.
As fires spread quickly, and once the alarm sounds, you may only have 1-2 minutes to escape. An effective and clear home evacuation plan is just as necessary to protecting everyone in your home and can truly make the difference between life and death.
Home Evacuation Plan:
Make a plan for escape in the event of a fire:
- Map out the floor plan of the building and assess the TWO escape routes from every room
- Keep all exits clear to ensure a quick and accessible escape
- Establish an emergency meeting place outside (eg. the letterbox)
- Once out of the building, stay out - Never re-enter a burning building
- Ensure everyone in the household understands the same plan
- Consider the needs of children, elderly or people with disabilities, and assign someone to assist if needed
- Once safely outside, call 000 for fire services
- Keep your escape plan visible and accessible, and practice it at least twice a year
It’s important that every member of the household is familiar with your home fire safety plan. Use the template and instructions provided in our Home Fire Safety Checklist to draw a floor plan of your home and identify your emergency escape routes.
Remember:
- Smoke can quickly cause confusion and disorientation
- Visibility will be low - stay low and move to your nearest exit
- If your clothes catch fire: STOP, DROP and ROLL until the flames are extinguished
