Smoke Alarm Action Day

  • 25 May 2026

On Monday the 1st of June, National Smoke Alarm Action Day is a reminder to check that your home is protected by working, in-date smoke alarms. Taking just a few minutes to ensure your alarms are functioning can significantly improve your household’s safety.

A working smoke alarm is the first line of defence in a fire. It provides an early warning, helping you and your family escape quickly. It can be the difference between a close call and a tragedy.

Why smoke alarm action day matters:

Recent insights reveal emerging concerns across Australian households:

  • Understanding is declining, with uncertainty about the alarm installed
  • Ageing and expired alarms are becoming more common.
  • Maintenance is dropping, with very low rates of monthly testing, cleaning, & battery checks.
  • A growing “smoke alarm literacy gap”, means more Australians are uncertain about maintaining their alarms.

TEST | CLEAN | CHECK

Replacements Timeframes:

  • Alkaline Battery alarms: replace every year (eg. 140e series)
  • Lithium Battery alarms: replace every 10 years (eg. 3000 series, 650iRF)

Simple Steps to Stay Safe:

  • Test the alarm monthly
  • Check the battery regularly
  • Confirm the replace-by date
  • Know your alarm type
  • Clean alarms twice a year to remove dust and insects

Small actions, done routinely, make a big difference
